© The Boot Store
Cowboy boots have been the cornerstone of western wear since the late 1800s. Over the years cowboy boots have evolved from the basic style used by the working cowboy into the numerous styles worn today by everyone from rodeo athletes to movie stars to people just like you. The history and evolution of cowboy boots parallels that of many notable periods in American history, so that each custom-made boot is a modern reflection of times past.

Throughout the late 1800s, the designs of cowboy boots were evolving, but around that time, the majority of boot designs were influenced by the European Cavalier style, and were made of better quality leather and had higher heels than previous styles. In the early 1900s boot makers began to add decorative stitching to the toes in addition to the straight lines stitched across the toe of the cowboy boot, forming what is called a toe wrinkle. These signature designs have remained the trademarks of custom-made cowboy boots to this day. The toes of the boots were also rounded, a characteristic that stuck around until the 1950s.

As a result of movies and radio about the Wild West, cowboys boots became desirable fashion items in the 1920s and 1930s. After 1940, cowboy boot designs became more detailed, like mini canvases reflecting colorful images of the West. In the 1950s, people really started listening to country music and rodeos became popular. This was an opportune time for the cowboy boots that had spent decades evolving to take center stage as coveted wardrobe additions. Needless to say, cowboy boots became extremely popular and millions of pairs were made in all shapes, colors and styles, for all types of people.

Cowboy boots continue to evolve in design and style, whether they follow the styles popularized in fashion and movies or they are simply suited to the needs of the working man or woman. Dedicated boot makers know there is virtually no end to the styles and techniques that can be used in bootmaking, which is why each custom-made pair is different from any other. In recent decades, we have seen perhaps another revolution in bootmaking, as fabricators become more daring, producing boot styles with studs, rhinestones and precious stones. But behind the glamour and glitz, Americans still recognize the handsomeness and timelessness of a pair of traditional cowboy boots.
